The Interesting History of the Air Force Flag
An act of Congress founded the United States Air Force in 1947. Before this time, there were only different air squadrons that would go where needed. After World War II, the government saw the need for a developed Air Force in the military.
They established the Air Force flag in 1951 under President Harry Truman. The field features the Air Force branch color of ultramarine blue field and an Air Force yellow trim. A bald eagle is placed over a crest encircled by thirteen stars and a scroll containing the words “United States Air Force.” There is a white cloud behind the eagle and the design on the crest is suggestive of lightning bolts.
Today, the Air Force flag is seen in parades, on flagpoles, and during various indoor and outdoor ceremonies by municipalities, government agencies, veterans groups, schools, and churches alike.
The Symbolism Behind the Air Force Flag
Interestingly enough, there is much symbolism in the Air Force flag.
The stars around the bald eagle represent the original thirteen colonies. The three stars above the eagle symbolize the three departments of defense – Air Force, Army, and Navy.
The bald eagle itself is a common symbol of the United States. It is the national bird, which represents power, nobility, and strength. The cloud behind the eagle is a representation of a creation of a new firmament.
The thunderbolts on the crest are symbolic of the air power of the U.S. military. They are also a powerful reminder of the explosive forces of nature that the Air Force must contend with daily.
Additionally, indoor flags have a yellow fringe around the flag, while outdoor flags do not.
How to Display an Air Force Flag
If you or a loved one are proud members of the Air Force, flying the flag undoubtedly a source of pride and respect. Many fly their Air Force flag on August 1 each year in honor of Air Force Day.
When displaying your Air Force flag, follow the guidelines of national flag etiquette. If you are flying many U.S. flags, the Air Force flag must be below the American flag (the American flag is always on top). The Air Force flag should also be to the observer’s left of the national flag if they are on separate flag poles.
The proper order for displaying military flags when they are all flown together are Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard.
